Fred Caldwell of Appomattox, Virginia pleaded guilty to obtaining money by false pretenses after submitting a claim to his insurance company using fake receipts.

According to Virginia State Police, Caldwell filed his claim after a metal building behind his residence suspiciously caught fire. The building and its contents were insured.

The Virginia State Police insurance fraud investigation began when the insurance company informed the VSP agency that Caldwell’s receipts might be phony. The investigation revealed thousands of dollars in fraudulent receipts from a service station and a furniture store. One receipt was found to be tampered with to show different figures.

Caldwell was convicted of grand larceny in Appomattox County Circuit Court and given a 10-year suspended sentence with three years active probation. He was also ordered to pay $14,000 in restitution to the insurance company.
