A Fargo, N.D. father and son have been charged with insurance fraud, theft, and illegally conducting an enterprise after an investigation found the two to have been involved in a total of 37 auto accidents in only two years.
From July 2008 to June 2010, Sead Mustafic, 43, and Senad Mustafic, 24, made Fargo roads a dangerous and expensive place to drive. The men allegedly defrauded various insurance companies out of more than $10,000 simply by changing lanes. The scheme essentially involved either Sead or Senad following a driver that was making lane changes, and speeding into the lane the driver was veering to so as to collide with the unassuming driver’s car. Because the target was making the lane change, he or she would be viewed as the faulty party for the collision, even though most claimed that the lane had been clear prior to the maneuver.
After causing the accidents, Sead and Senad managed to make things even worse by causing further damage to their vehicles once they’d left the scene. One report states that the paint on one of the cars looked as though it had been scratched with a brick to increase the value of the claim. The men couldn’t scrape by with that little trick though, as investigators quickly found that not all of the damage to the vehicle was consistent to the collision reconstruction conducted by authorities following the accident.
The North Dakota Insurance Department followed up on a report of suspected fraud, and found Sead to have quite a history. He had been involved in a whopping 27 crashes; Senad followed close behind with a total of 10 accidents. Both men, however, are tied with charges of illegally conducting an enterprise and theft of property, which are Class B felonies. Sead Mustafic sets the bar a little lower though, and is also charged with a Class C felony count of insurance fraud, while Senad Mustafic faces a misdemeanor count of insurance fraud.
